The Challenge

The bottle of yesterday is made of glass.

Glass bottles are costly and destructive to the environment that winemakers rely on to produce high-quality fruit.

Glass bottles can even fall short in achieving their chief objective: protecting the wine inside.

Symptoms

Harmful emissions and energy usage

Heavy glass bottles emit CO2 and consume energy throughout their lifecycle: manufacturing, shipping, and disposal.

Fragile and prone to breakage.

Roughly 2% of glass bottles break in transit, hurting winery margins and consumer sentiment.

Wasteful packaging.

Packing materials designed to mitigate breakage ultimately reduce pallet capacity, increase shipping costs, and create excess material waste.

Flimsy, unappealing alternatives.

Currently available alternative wine packaging falls short of winemaker standards, conveying poor quality to consumers and failing to protect the wine during long-term aging.

Burdensome to the bottom line.

Breakage and inefficient shipping chip away at winery profitability.

Wasteful packaging.

Packing materials designed to mitigate breakage ultimately reduce pallet capacity, increase shipping costs, and create excess material waste.

THE SOLUTION

We are thrilled to introduce the Verre Vert bottle:

The Verre Vert bottle (pronounced /vehr vehr/) is the first of its kind: an unbreakable, environmentally friendly wine bottle that looks, feels, and acts like traditional glass. Its lightweight material slashes shipping costs and carbon emissions as the bottle travels from manufacturing to producers, shelves, and, ultimately, consumers. Moreover, its durable walls eliminate the risk of expensive and frustrating breakage during shipping - as well as the need for wasteful packing materials. Glass linings on both the interior and exterior of the bottle ensure the wine only ever touches glass, guaranteeing an aging process exactly like that of a glass bottle.

So what does this cutting-edge technology mean? For winemakers, Verre Vert bottles are an opportunity to lead the industry toward a more sustainable future and a more cost-effective way to bottle and protect the fruits of their labor. For wine drinkers, Verre Vert bottles reduce carbon emissions and make a difference with every glass consumed - without sacrificing the tradition and mystique of wine.

We are delighted to partner with you in this journey. Let’s help the wine world welcome a bright, sustainable, and delicious future.

End of Life

Environmentally friendly manufacturing.

Producing a Verre Vert bottle emits 34% less carbon than producing a glass bottle, reducing the wine industry’s contributions to greenhouse gas emissions.

Glass | 625g of CO2
VV | 413g of CO2

Less than half the weight.

A Verre Vert bottle weighs just 140 grams, 72% lighter than the traditional glass bottle.

VV | 140g

Increased pallet capacity.

Lighter bottles lead to increased capacity of 2 additional pallets for previously weight-constrained trucks - and, due to their durability and weight, 18 Verre Vert bottles fit comfortably in a traditional 12-Bordeaux box, almost doubling the number of bottles a truck can hold.

12 glass bottles
18 VV bottles

Unbreakable and impermeable to UV light.

With interior and exterior glass linings, the Verre Vert bottle ensures that wine will age like it would in a traditional glass bottle by protecting the wine from oxygen transfer and providing an inert contact surface. The bulk of the bottle is “bulletproof glass,” which effectively eliminates breakage. Moreover, Verre Vert bottles’ impermeability to UV light protects the wine measurably better against UV damage than traditional glass.

Glass | 2% break rate
VV | Unbreakable

Environmentally friendly end of life.

Verre Vert bottles are 100% recyclable; recycling Verre Vert bottles saves nearly four times as much energy as recycling glass.

Glass | Saves 1.12 MJ
VV | Saves 4.43 MJ

A testament to tradition.

In shape, color, and durability, Verre Vert bottles celebrate centuries of winemaking tradition and preserve the aesthetic cherished by winemakers and wine drinkers alike.

45% reduction in bottle costs.

By cutting costs in packaging, shipping, and breakage, Verre Vert saves wineries 45% in bottle expenses - protecting the bottom line at the same time as the environment.

Glass | $0.58 to ship
VV | $0.33 to ship
